Reederei Cassen Eils – Information about ferry services and vessels
Reederei Cassen Eils GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1947 by Cassen Eils from Norderney and has been active with regular ferry services to Heligoland since 1952. The shipping company made history by restoring the regular connection to Heligoland after the Second World War with the Rudolf. Today, the company is known as the only shipping line that guarantees the supply of Heligoland year-round, even under severe winter conditions. Later, services to Büsum, Cuxhaven, and Neuwerk were established, and the fleet was expanded with classic passenger ships, catamarans, and cargo boats.
On January 6, 2010, captain and owner Cassen Eils passed away at the age of 86. After 59 years, the family-owned shipping company was sold to A.G. Ems from Emden on September 2, 2010. Since then, A.G. Ems has continued to operate the shipping line as an independent subsidiary and has expanded it further.
Additionally, the shipping company Wega from Fedderwardersiel was acquired in 2016, followed by the acquisition of Fluß- und Touristik GmbH Carstensen from Cuxhaven in 2019, including the two ships "Otter" and "Störtebeker". Two catamarans from AG Ems also operate the Heligoland service under the Reederei Cassen Eils flag. In January 2024, the Cuxhaven-based shipping company N.A.R.G. and its excursion boats "Jan Cux" and "Jan Cux II" were taken over from longtime competitor Christian Detzkeit following his retirement.
Ferry service Cuxhaven - Heligoland
The connection from Cuxhaven to Heligoland is the core route of Cassen Eils. Today, ships such as the "Fair Lady" and the "Funny Girl" sail regularly, while the modern Heligoland serves as a classic seebäderschip with modern LNG dual-fuel engines. Depending on the schedule, extra departures are deployed to meet demand, especially during the tourist season. In addition to passenger transport, the shipping company also handles freight transport to Heligoland and Neuwerk, which is essential for supplying shops and restaurants.
Ferry service Cuxhaven - Neuwerk
The ferry service from Cuxhaven to Neuwerk Island provides a unique connection to one of the most idyllic spots in the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. Annually from late March through October, the passenger ship "Flipper" sails from the “Alte Liebe” in Cuxhaven to the small island of Neuwerk—a journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours that is dependent on the tides. The ferry service is popular with day-trippers and nature lovers looking to discover the tranquility, vast sandflats, and historical sights of Neuwerk.
