Ferry Schiermonnikoog - Information about the crossing and ferries

The ferry to Schiermonnikoog operates between Lauwersoog in Groningen and the port of Schiermonnikoog and is operated by Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten. Following the takeover of the former State Ferry Service (Rijksveerdienst), Wagenborg grew to become the primary shipping company for the island's connection.

History of the Schiermonnikoog ferry

The ferry service to Schiermonnikoog has a rich history dating back to 1850, when a sailing boat connection was established for postal services. Tourism began to emerge around 1865, leading to a steamboat service connecting Groningen and Schiermonnikoog twice a week. After several interruptions due to limited demand and technical adjustments (such as the conversion to a screw-propelled steamboat) F. de Jong took over operations in the early 20th century with a motorboat service from Oostmahorn. Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten became involved in 1919 and, following the reclamation of the Lauwerszee in 1969, moved the operation to the newly constructed ferry port of Lauwersoog.

Since privatization in 1985, the service has been fully owned by Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten, maintaining the reliable link from the mainland to the car-free island.
