Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum GmbH – information about the company and ferries

Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum GmbH (W.D.R.) was founded in 1885 as a local initiative to improve the then-rare connection between Wyk (on Föhr) and the mainland. In the early years, the focus was on tourist excursions, but the company quickly grew into a vital part of regional supply and regular passenger and vehicle transport. Since the merger with Amrumer Schiffahrts-AG in 1971, which included the Hallig Line and the Schlüttsiel–Amrum ferry service, W.D.R. has operated as the sole connected service provider for the islands of Föhr, Amrum, and the Halligen.

Over the decades, W.D.R. systematically invested in modern ro-ro ferries and terminal renovations, including the Nordfriesland, Schleswig-Holstein, Uthlande, and the Norderaue, which entered service in 2018. This created a reliable, tide-independent service from the ports of Dagebüll and Schlüttsiel to Föhr and Amrum.

Today, W.D.R. operates five of its own car ferries and also offers public transport on the islands, without public subsidies, with approximately 160 employees and around 315 shareholders, including the city of Wyk and the partner shipping company Norden-Frisia.
