Eigen Veerdienst Terschelling (EVT) – information about the company and ferries

Eigen Veerdienst Terschelling (EVT) was founded in 2006 by a group of local entrepreneurs dissatisfied with the service and fares of the shipping company Doeksen. From August 2008, EVT offered a competing ferry service between Harlingen and Terschelling, initially with only one small passenger ship, later (from 2012) also with a car ferry, the Spathoek, which could accommodate approximately 400 passengers and 54 cars.

EVT positioned itself as a cheaper alternative and, by aggressively keeping ticket prices low, was able to attract many passengers, especially during peak periods. At the same time, Doeksen continued to operate at less profitable times, after which the competition caused tensions and led to a legal dispute – sometimes referred to as the “ferry war.” In April 2014, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment reached a settlement: EVT sold its ship and services to Doeksen, received €9 million in compensation, withdrew all legal proceedings, and ceased operations. This gave Doeksen exclusive rights to the routes to Terschelling and Vlieland for the next 15 years.

Although EVT is no longer active, the company continues to play a significant role in the recent history of the Wadden Islands: its efforts and struggle have, to this day, led to greater transparency, islanders’ participation, and a more robust concession agreement between residents and shipping companies.
