26-01-2026:Departed with wood pulp from Figueira da Foz to Germany, became adrift outside the harbour after losing its rudder, reportedly from hitting a sand accumulation at the port entrance. Port officials, however, are emphasizing that they believe the incident was caused by a failed dredging job at the port’s entrance instead of the heavy weather. They said that €28 million was spent to transfer three million cubic meters of sand, and since the work was completed, there have been problems with the sandbar.
27-01-2026:Reported around 22 nautical miles off the Portuguese coast, still drifting but monitored by a Portuguese naval patrol vessel. Port officials confirmed there were no local tug resources available in Figueira da Foz or nearby Aveiro. A Norwegian tugboat was chartered by the ship’s owner and cargo interests to reach “EIKBORG”. This tug was expected to arrive near the cargo ship around late evening/night to begin assistance efforts. Portuguese ports have refused entry for “EIKBORG” in its current condition.
29-01-2026:Tugboat “SKANDI LIFTER” arrived from Vigo and towed to Spain.
