The ship is named after Hidde Dirks Kat (1747–1824), the renowned whaling commander from Hollum on Ameland who survived the disastrous Arctic expedition of 1777, when his ship was crushed by ice off Greenland. Together with a handful of crew he reached the Greenland coast on foot and was rescued by the local Inuit population. Kat later described these events in his famous diary, which became one of the most remarkable survival accounts in Dutch maritime history.
